Shipping layout is one of the factors that most affects the cart abandonment rate. An unexpected shipping fee will cause the customer to lose the payment step.
Common fictions
- ✓Flat shipping fee — the same fee on every order; easiest method to manage
- ✓Free shipping over a certain amount — effective for increasing average cart size
- ✓Completely free shipping — you spread the cost over the product price
- ✓Desi/weight based calculation — necessary if you sell bulky or heavy items
How to determine the free shipping threshold?
A common approach is to set a threshold slightly above your current average cart amount. So the customer is tempted to add one more product to reach the threshold. If you set the threshold too high it will be ineffective.
Tip
Make the shipping cost visible on the product page and in the cart. Knowing the total cost before the customer steps towards payment increases confidence.

If you are using payment at the door, take into account the shipping company's collection service fee; otherwise this amount will be removed from your profit.
